Ideal setting for mac

I have a magic air. I am trying to get it into iMovie. It loads for iQ to watch. The down load is MP4. I can not get it into imovies and even in iQ it’s choppy. Should I change the setting to mov instead of MP4. My Mac is probably 5 years old.

Any advise?

Yes. Change to .mov and use a converter to change the current format of .mp4 to .mov with the existing clips.
