Sailing to Ruang Island we had little idea of what to expect.
We knew that there had been a violent volcanic eruption 4 months before but we were not prepared for the near total destruction we witnessed. 800 people had been forced to evacuate in April and until now no-one has returned. The main village is totally destroyed with flying molten rocks burning all buildings and the rivers of mud choking wells, covering gardens and destroying all infrastructure.
Most of the surrounding reef is under meters of mud now but some patches of coral are visible and around these life abounds. It was a somber experience but at the same time amazing to see the power of nature.
We humans are so small and weak and sometimes it's good to face that. We appreciate our lives, our freedom and health everyday.
Enjoy.
