Is digital zoom only available in video mode?

Seems to be the case and if so why ? Would like to take still images in digital zoom but have not found the function.

Yes the Air 2S zoom only works for video.... I don't know why DJI won't give us the option of taking zoomed stills but it isn't currently possible. You can crop in post of course but it would be nice to be able to frame a shot using the zoom.

I think only crop in post.

There is no reason to have it. It does exactly the same thing as cropping the image.

nope - never has been for any Air2's.

I like the Autel EVO 2 approach to this..... you can take a photo while zoomed in which helps for framing and it saves this as a JPEG, but it also saves the uncropped raw photo so that I can go back, edit and crop it however I see fit.
