Is it really that hard to get this type of shot?

Yes it is hard to do manually. Especially if you were also to introduce a gain in altitude as the drone flies away. As soon as you start to yaw, the drone will naturally start to head in that direction as well, and thus leave the straight line you are trying to follow. I can't see any way of doing this maneuver perfectly with full manual control on a Mavic. The ways it can be done are:
  • Using any Mavic you could set up a straight line waypoint path and then rotate the drone as it flies itself on the path. I haven't tried this but I think the drone should be able to do a full 180 and transition smoothly through the turn as it keeps on the designated path.
  • You can do it easily using just manual controls on a higher end drone with independent gimbal/camera control like an Inspire 2. You just keep the drone going in a straight line while you rotate only the camera 180 degrees.

Except with DJI Fly and the MA2 you can't setup waypoints (yet).

What would happen if, with the drone facing you, you put it into "course lock" then fly backwards and yaw at the same time? This stems from a vague recollection of "course lock" on a Phantom 3.
I am sure I have flown a P3 in a straight whilst yawing but that was using "Home lock" and from memory home lock doesn't work within 20 m of the home point, unfortunately it seems home lock is not available on the Air 2

I would think any of the various methods/features would work that allow you to stay on a designated path/course would do the trick, like TapFly as well.

Anyone who actually flies RC planes and helis shouldn't have an issue. That's actually one peeve I've had with the "drone" community. Most fliers have zero coordination (experience) to actually fly. DJI made it way too easy to fly. With that said, let's see if I'll be putting my foot in my mouth.

Doesn't matter how good you are. Flying that maneuver manually while keeping a constant forward velocity and attempting to stay on a straight path, is extremely difficult due to the physics of it. I'm not saying it's impossible, but it is very difficult to do in a smooth manner .
