Sultanahmet is a neighborhood known for being home to the striking Ottoman-era Blue Mosque with its iconic minarets, along with the famed, mosaic filled Hagia Sophia mosque, and the Basilica Cistern. Adjacent Sultanahmet Square is a park, gardens and fountains, along with the Egyptian Obelisk of Theodosius and the nearby 4th-century Stone of Million pillar ruin. This large space was formerly the site of the third century Hippodrome of Constantinople, used to host chariot races.

Firstly, the video is great. It is exactly the same type of documentation I normally do on a trip like this. This single pass would typically be my opening, intro shot.

I was just in Istanbul (Four Seasons Sultanahmet) in September, for an overnight connection to Krakow, Poland. (My Poland video was already submitted to this forum). I spent the day walking through the Sultanahmet, photographing from the ground. with Osmo Action Pro 5. I looked into using my Mini 4 Pro (which I had with me in Istanbul. I brought the drone to Poland with me) and the ability of getting a Turkish permit were nearly impossible. The risks of this flight ( a single pass over or by the Blue Mosque) might have risked a fine, arrest, or worse? I decided against it.

So my question is, how did you get permission to do this flight?

Its just a tad over 47 years ago, in October 1978, when we stayed for a week in a small motel/hotel on the Western side, right below and next to the sea and bridge connecting West to East Istanbul. That was a journey of a lifetime where my wife and I drove from London UK to New Delhi India. I drove all the way in our own car, a Ford Fairmont Station Wagon, over a period of 30 days, covering almost 8800 miles from our home in London to my dad's home in New Delhi. What an experience; we had a blast.

Forget about applying for the drone permit. Like you said it’s next to impossible. I just flew my mini 4P. Of course not doing it out in the open. The Mini 4P is pretty stealthy due to its quietness and small size.

Wow! The place must be nicer 47 years ago.

I can tell from your video, some things have modernized in Istanbul; there was no metro back then. During our week long stay, we didn't do very much except relax, eat and drink beer. The remaining drive through rest of Turkey, Iran, Afghanistan, Pakistan and finally to New Delhi India was full of adventure and pure survival luck. 1978 had major events in Iran and Aghanistan and we survived through both. We stayed in India for around six months, then drove to and shipped the car back from Calcutta to Bristol UK before flying back to the UK.

As I suspected, you flew, what call "stealth."
It's great as long as they don't arrest me. There was once a movie about Turkey where a guy gets put into a horrible jail for smoking one joint, and I didn't want to be that guy.

Midnight Express was a great film. Had a huge impact on myself and many others back in the 70's. So much so, that part of my travelling plan to Turkey was cancelled. I just spent more time in Greece instead.
