Jumpy playback on Computer

Hi All, I am pretty sure this has been posted before but I can't seem to find a thread. I am a brand new Mavic Pro 2 pilot so apologies in advance if you respond with answers and I'm not sure what you mean.

Shot video and stills, all good, perfect playback on my device straight after shooting, no problems (alternatively on SD card and on internal storage)

Have downloaded everything and the video when I play back on my computer through quicktime (for example) jumps as though frames are missing. I see this complaint ALOT on the web but many seem to have this while viewing through whichever device they are using for immediate playback.
I am guessing this can be simply fixed and it's more to do with my video card on my laptop, the age of the lap top and the software I'm playing the video through?

I have what I thought was a more than adequate laptop, but those 4k files make it do the same thing. Had to use a newer laptop to stop the chop

Ah right, I was worried that would be the case. But, if I sent the files to someone else who has fast computers and software who also edits my stuff, they shouldn't see the chop? Is it just the way I'm viewing it and not the actual file being corrupted?

I’d think even a 7-year-old Mac Pro could handle 4K, but maybe not. I’d think a MacBook Pro (if that’s what it is) that old could very well have problems, though.

Since it’s happening with both on-board storage and SD, I’d say the files are fine. If it was just on the SD, I’d first check to make sure it is fast enough.

Not sure.. I thought my files has issues until I tried another computer. I mostly shoot in 1080 now unless I am looking for a real detailed shoot. My main reason is STORAGE, those 4k files are huge.

If you are editing on the Mac Pro, try making proxy files - right click the media and Transcode (from memory - not in front of my darling right now). This makes easier transcoded files for editing smoothness and the final output will be good too, depending on the output and the playback device obviously, but way better than the original 4K H264/265 files.

Obvious things that I’m sure you have checked - Make sure your Mac has enough disk space and enough RAM. These two things will make heaps of difference. Ensure you don’t have lots of other applications open simultaneously too.

Failing all that, it is about time to sink a few grand into a new Mac Pro!

the jumping is because the processor and video card are not able to handle the amount of information in a 4k file my equipment will not play back 4k so i have found the only solution apart from buying a new one is to record in 1080p at 30 fps which will play back with no problem on older equipment

I purchased a new MacBook Pro with 32 gig of ram and it flies through the 4K files. I bought it just for my DJI aircraft and playing with the video after flights. So far the newer hardware made all the difference from my old (7-8 years) MacBook Pro. Good luck and if you do get a new Mac have fun with it. I had to take a 2nd mortgage on my house to pay for it but it should last another 8+ years.

You could also use something like Handbrake to reduce a 4K file to 1080 (it may take a while to render but you can always leave it overnight). That way you'd have the full-resolution version for later editing but have a usable version now, assuming storage is not an issue.

YouTube supports 4K, but it's fairly compressed so not quite as good as you'd see playing directly on a 4K or higher screen, but better than 1080.

As others have said, it's your computer. I have a late 2011 MacBook Pro that I recently put in a 1TB SSD and 16gb of ram. The intel HD 3000 512mb graphics card just won't handle 4k. From my research, the graphics card isn't easy to change unless you are a soldering robot.

Probably. We are already playing-with 11k 360!

8k is the next jump which is available but not needed since nothing is made in 8k res yet. Give it a couple more years and we will start seeing 8k TV's and equipment

thanks everyone, there are a lot of great points and things for me to investigate there. I tried it on a newer laptop and it works fine so, yes old computer is the problem. The imagery gets used for tv and web for a news wire so I'm pretty sure they will prefer the 4K but will wait for them to get back to me on that one, 1080 may be sufficient.
