Litchi requires DJI activation?

Was looking at the Litchi app and it says I need an internet connection to verify license with DJI servers? What is this about?

I believe any DJI drone must be activated when it is a virgin before it will fly. I bought my Phantom from DJI and had to activate. I bought my Mavic used and it flew without me activating it.

Yes, the 3rd party applications must phone home to DJI to use the DJI API.
