My main issue is finding a moving target that is safe to photograph without trees etc near where I live.

What if you just use active track? It’s probably better than what I can do manually to be honest

I find active track better with video

In the video, you can see that the pilot is using tripod mode. On the MP, that limits the speed of the aircraft to a maximum of about 2 1/4 mph. I’ve never attempted one of these shots but it seems like taking photos such as these is best done with a slow-moving subject.
