I notice while preparing to calibrate the IMU that the fan kicks on pretty quickly.. is that common? I should have paid attention to the temperature indicated. Gamble lock and cover is removed prior to battery being turned on. Just curious if this is normal with the Mavic Pro..

Yes it’s normal. I’d be worried if it didn’t. In flight, the drone is getting cooling air across the fins.

Yes, the fan will kick on as needed to keep the Mavic cool.
