Ladies and gentlemen - exhibit A.

I didn't notice it until yesterday. My first thought was "Oh, they have put a slot for stowing the charging adapter. How neat!" But no, the charging adapter doesn't fit there. I don't see how it could be ornamental - it being hidden there in the bottom and all. So what is it for?

I always thought that this is where the L-connector of the short phone cable goes, if you leave it connected to the controller and stow the arms?
