I'm hearing about a lot of people crashing their Mavics and then having Gimbal problems. Now I know the Mavic's Gimbal is TINY, and I have no experience with other DJI drones like the Phantom, but is the Mavic's Gimbal the weakest when it comes to durability ? Or will all gimbals in the DJI lineup react the same to crashes ? Just curious.

I've flown everything, from full size DSLR's, to the Mavic, in gimbal size, and they are all, by nature an extremely balanced and precision device. A mechanical gimbal will never be able to sustain the forces of a crash without a great chance of damage, no matter what size or brand. If you crash and your gimbal still works fine, consider yourself very lucky.

Yes and no, I dont know where you live but while the weather is cool and until you can fly without any mishaps fly with the gimbal protector. the gimbal is always the most delicate part of ant fpv quad. Dji or otherwise. I have had Phantoms 3 adv and Phantom4. The toughest football player always wears a cup, right?
The only problem with the Mavic is the gimble protector dome also blocks cooling vents. You can get away with it when its in its 32-to 50 degrees but when it gets warm your Mavic will overheat. There are all sorts of gimbal protectors for the Phantom 3 and 4 bur i've yet to see a clever person with a 3D printer come up with one.

Great answer, just wanted some clarification. I know some drones have been in some bad crashes, yet the gimbals seem to work ok, luckily I've never had a crash where a gimbal was hit (crashed my Parrot Bebop 2 from a short distance, no gimbal on that drone).

Like an idiot, I was so excited to try it out that it was about 7pm and dark. I started it up, flew it up about 5 feet and let go of the joysticks. The darn thing started drifting and took off and crashed into the neighbors bushes. Like an idiot, I NEVER CALIBRATED THE COMPASS FIRST. I was crapping my pants at how I was gonna explain this to my wife who gave me an earful when i told her how much my FIRST DRONE cost me. Luckily I dont appear to have sustained any damage to the gimbal cuz i have since flown it a couple times and the videos look nice and stable.

I would start by reading the entire manual first. Especially with advanced machinery such as the MP. Failure to plan is planning to fail. hopefully you didnt damage anything.

Not calibrating compass first flight wouldn't generally cause this to happen. In fact, per the manual, you're only supposed to calibrate the compass when the app/drone tell you to. The exception to that would be if the craft doesn't fly in the correct direction when you push the sticks. This sounds more like magnetic interference or something along that line.

Go easy on yourself. We all do stupid things. No harm done and lesson learned.

Yes, the gimbal is somewhat fragile. But, have you seen some of the torture the Mavic can endure? If you haven't already seen these 2 videos you will be amazed:
