mavic mini and smart controller

I have the smart controller and love it. Ill also be getting the mini at some stage, but Im no way put out that these two will not be compatible. The hardware is in different classes and im realistic enough to not expect the smart controller not o be compatible with a cheap introductory drone.
As long as it is compatible with any future phantom of mavics that are an upgrade to what we have, ill be happy. If the day comes and this is not the case, then ill be shouting from the tallest building. :)

Yea, are they mad it doesn't fly the Tello...?

Yes I love the smart controller and am happy I purchased it as the upgraded bundle and saved extra cash. I do not wish to use my smart phone or an iPad/tablet as a controller which is the main reason I purchased it at the time. DJI lose out here because I would have purchased the Mini if it was SC compatible....and have to say ‘cheap’ is subjective. I wouldn’t personally say the Mini is a cheap drone and don’t buy your argument but see it in reverse. The SC is an upgrade quality item that is not cheap therefore it should be able to control all DJI drones.

"if wishes were horses...."

the mav mini is using a different radio system, and Im assuming they did everything they could to get that weight down. Cant imagine they would go for the extra weight to appease the few of use that really want to use our smart controllers with this new kit.

Ok... So, Ive had people question this.. the use of the SC with the Tello... NO, its not Occusync.. OK.. GET IT.. LOL.. But... After side loading Google play store to my SC, MY sc thinks I am an android phone. Last I knew, Android phone work with the mini directly. Ok.. one step further... Ive personally tested the Tello for the past hour.. Works like a champ.. No loading APK's and doing it the hard way. Ok, Google play did not show the app... Darn.. All is a loss...

Wait... Dji.com... OK! so, I went to install from the DJI.com page.. what would ya know, it installed. Awesome. So, I then ran the app, and it went over the allowing of use, agree to terms. then, whomp whomp... said, device is not able to be used. so... one more time I closed it, and opened the app... and what would ya know, it wants to connect, and acts just like the app on the phone. So..... I urge you to try this.. Maybe I should have bought a Mini over a Tello... I can say... Ive even taken video and photos of the Tello flying.. and the app working for the mini (DJI fly) if I can do it... get this far... Someone please take over... It should see this as a phone. And it should work. I don't see why.

Anyone local, western mass with a Mini, Please PM me, so we can squash this debate. It act's just like my DJI go 4 app does for the Mavic.. Hey, can't hurt to try and push some buttons. might be possible.. Yes, its wifi.... So is Tello.. to which I have video of my flying it with the SC

Well done for getting that far Shivers, hope you find someone nearby with a Mini. Let us know how it goes if you do. Too many naysayers here, the SC has everything required hardware wise, just needs some modding on the software side and your idea is simple but smart, no need to jump through a ton of hoops ;) . If you get the SC to work with the Mini in 'Android Phone' mode, I will purchase the Mini for sure.

Just saying, its not all impossible. Yes, by specs and fancy features, no.. it won't work with.. But to basics.. Wifi.. yea, I've proven that with the Tello.. And the SC blows the phones wifi out of the water. Well, at least for me, it was a ton less interference, and further range. The minis warnings and such are over cell.. so.. that could be handled by the fact the Mini can connect to a wifi hot spot, and share with apps.. So, most of it all is solved. I have NO idea if the control sticks are gonna work, and all of that.. But for sure... App is up and running... It says controller connected.. I would have to think that's the SC controls. But hey.. it could still Not work without a hack or two. Point.. this should be possible. I would also advise, not to update your SC if you plan to try at this point.. and mine is up to date as of today. Play store and all. Lot of people have said no no no... with little work, it could be possible. Maybe none at all..

So I don’t feel like hosting video to YouTube or anything like that... So screen shots of my SC with DJI fly App working and it stating clearly remote control connected. Thus also siting that it searches for the AC. Again... Anyone local... Let’s make some history, or squash the debate.

So, some part of the program has a check of hardware. I’m finding that not every open of the app will bring to the main screen. Sometimes it will say this does not work. But, then most... I get right in. App also sees control sticks.

The Mavic Mini won't fly with a phone, only the controller.

I hate to be yet another raining on your parade, but:

The reason that your SC thinks it is an Android Phone is because it is an android phone. The SC is an Android and you can load any android software on it. It's not recommended as it uses up needed memory but there is nothing stopping you.

Your biggest problem however is that the SC is an Occusync Radio system. Even though it broadcasts in the same spectrum frequencies as wifi, it is not wifi. It is something totally different.

Its like broadcasting in English when the only language the receiver speaks is Japanese.

Occusync was original based on Light-bridge and us Phantom owners would have really liked to use the SC on our Phantoms. But even that, was a bridge too far.

Enjoy yourself trying, but it is pointless. Just make sure that you dont break anything.

Cheers

Heck, I hooked up a LTE module to my Smart Control and sent some texts for laughs. I used to use my Sony PSP as a phone. Any drone that will fly using a phone/tablet will probably fly using the SC. Drones that don't fly using a phone won't. I've considered trying to fly my Skydio 2 with the SC but it seems like a lot of trouble for nothing.

As I said, it's an Android device. But the point of the SC is that it has sticks to control the aircraft. Kind of pointless using it as an android and use its wifi or bluetooth connection and have to drive the quad on the screen with your finger.

Cheers

He said it recognized the sticks, I guess... I don't know. Ever since the Mini has come out people have been mad you can't fly it with the Smart Controller... The Smart Controller weighs more than the entire Mini Fly More Combo. I'm fine with keeping them separate. I was interested in using the Crystalsky but gave it up...

The CrystalSky is not a 64 bit android system so we are pretty screwed there. I have 3 of them. One of each, and its annoying the lack of support from DJI.

DJI were pretty clear that the SC is Occusync and will support future Occusync drones. It was never going to support older drones or wifi drones.

People get mad because they want and can't have. I want a new Ferrari for the price of a new Toyota Camry. Sometime you just have to accept you cant get your way on everything.

The mini is what it is. Its a pretty cool little drone. I think mine is great and I am quite happy to drive it with the controller and my iPhone.

Cheers

Again, I’m not saying that DJI should support. That would be great, and have a feeling that it would prob not take much more to include the Mini.
As my photos show, it clearly states the controller is hooked up and working. It sees the sticks and I can calibrate them.
I’m playing around, and hacking... (hacking being that this is not standard software, I consider it a hack) Testing... What ever you like to call it.
If I had a mini, I would test further... BUT.... I’ve been able to prove what you see above this far, with little to overcome.

I’m guessing with some support of people that know the software more, and someone close with a Mini I could at least pair with and try... Well that would further push the debate.

again, my finding and testing is to not upset a soul around here! If your upset by my posting, of feel anyone needs to rudely comment on what I’ve done, or trying to do, please save it.

Let’s try something new! If you can contribute, or add to the conversation, please do... If it’s just negative words and emotions, please save it.
My purpose is what the OP is looking to to, without hardware mods... Further his distance. I’m actively trying to do just that.

Again, they said the Tello would not work with SC, I have video of my flying with increased distance to prove that.

anyone local to Western mass with a mini, or someone with just the AC I could maybe barrow?

mods, and OP, should I start a new post!? Or should we continue this on topic of trying things to further distance!? Thanks.

Sure the Tello will work on the SC, but not with the physical sticks. Tello app wants to see a Gamesir remote on the USB or BT. So you're stuck with on screen controls. If you don't have a tablet 5" or bigger then I suppose the SC is better than nothing, but bulkier than a plain tablet.

Mini: I am surprised the Fly recognized the M2 RC built into the SC, since my phone and tablet distinguish the MM and M2 RCs and associated to Fly and Go respectively, but SC remote might be presenting a more generic RC on the USB bus.
Here's the kicker: you still need to bind the SC RC to the AC. That's only possible with Ocusync2 capable ACs.

Spark and Air may work in WiFi mode, but then like the Tello, you're stuck with on screen sticks.

People just seem to forget that the SC is an Android tablet and M2 RC in one, forgetting the RC side is specialized to use OS2 only, and that even the ACs that use enhanced WiFi between AC and RC is also a specialized protocol that a regular WiFi client can't even see, let alone connect. SC only has standard WiFi client associated with the tablet function and not the RC function.

Hey Dan! Thanks for coming on board! Always nice chatting with ya.
I do understand what your saying.... I’m shocked that it allowed me that much. I’m also shocked that it saw the controller. Again, trying can’t hurt. Ha ha. Yes, onscreen with Tello, a tablet would be good, but I was considering SC for the better Wi-Fi radio in that product to gain more distance... we’ll at least cleaner signal. That works. Yes, on screen your right.

Really the next step is trying to bind. at that point it will prob fail. This is where I loose, being I don’t have the mini. I’m sure it prob won’t work. For that I still wonder if something can be designed to just see hardware needed to fly the Mini.

it’s all just playing, I’m board with winter. Can’t hurt to try it all Ha ha.

The WiFi on the SC won't be any better than on any other device. WiFi is used on the tablet side like any other device, not the RC side like standalone RCs.

Welcome aboard? I've been on this site for over a year and on PhantomPilots even longer! [emoji4]
No man, I meant welcome to the conversation... always nice chatting with ya... Sorry for that coming across wrong.
And I’ll have to disagree with the Wi-Fi statement. Seems my SC has a much stronger longer signal then my IPhone. But maybe that’s just me.
