Today I am returning my Mavic Mini. I was disappointed by it’s range or lack of it! Having owned it for two weeks and several flights I became disillusioned by the fact at around or just over 500 m my tablet screen would go blank and the aircraft would execute an emergency RTH. At this point there was nothing I could do but wait to regain control at some point during the landing phase. DJI specs state an operating range of 2 km on the CE version: 2.4 GHz: 2000 m (MIC / CE). However I am aware of the 500 m range on 5.8 GHz: 500 m (CE). Still I expected better especially flying from a hill in open countryside.

On a brighter note I should be in the position to try the FCC version shortly.

You'll get the FCC version which will limit you to 5.8ghz and a little bit more power than the CE version but ultimately in a rural environment the FCC version in a CE area will have less range than a CE version on 2.4ghz.

I will only know at the end of the day when I try it out. I am sure if it is good enough for state-side pilots it will be good enough for me. I don't hear any complaints from them!

Well are you moving to the states? If not you will have a reduced power output model as the FCC version dramatically cuts its power when outside of the FCC region. A perfect test of the FCC model in a CE area got it to 1600m over the sea. The CE model in a semi rural location on 2.4ghz can do 2000m+

What's not clear is how/when it switches to 2.4. I suppose switching mid-flight would cause an RTH but still, DJI should have figured something out...
