Every country is different, in Canada its 90m. If you tinker with the settings in the transmitter you can go higher, but if caught and reviewed by someone who knows where to look (iffy chance) you are in for a fine. Lateral distance “technically” in Canada is 500m and must be VLOS or visual line of sight. Realistically most great photography and safe flying, less wind etc is under 100m, but its very easy to go beyond 500m and depending on the background and whether you have the lights on its pretty **** hard to see. Sometimes I try to hear it first to know where to look! If you are out in the hinterland, are comfortable with flying and there are is no air traffic or “strategic” structures under you (power lines, highways etc) then exceeding 120m and certainly 500m is kind of. A Victimless crime. If a drone goes down in a forest and nobody is listening etc....But if you are a new flyer I would stay with 500 and 120. You have a VERY high chance of crashing your drone, dont worry, we all have done it and yes it sucks, but you will get another. Believe me.
