I think the bigger issue in the article is that Wing is a UTM and has (had) a potential financial stake in "network" RID. While it might be fiscally doable for corporations, it's a hobby killer for recreation and small business commercial operators.

Does anyone make the add on RID yet? I wonder what this “pimple” on my M2P is going to look like and the weight.

The rule just came out so no. Besides the rule doesn't have any technical details on how it should be implemented. It is suspected it will be a modification/enhancement the broadcast WiFi and BT does to advertise itself. Even with that known, you still have to standardize the data stream. If I transmit AC coordinates first but you expect FAA ID first, it won't work.

Mfrs have 18 months to establish a standard (good luck with that) and THEN manufacture based on those standards.

Interesting.. the article states that it is voluntary and the drones defaults are set at off , but my drone are set to on and I never turned them on, can I turn them off?

Another article, I think by the same person, basically hawking how a commercial venture (KittyHawk) is upset over the removal of the network portion. They simply cannot fathom how the FAA agreed with the 10's of thousands of drone users that we do NOT WANT TO PAY MORE MONEY TO SOME NAMELESS CORP in order to fly our drones. Current regs are fine with minor tweaks like encrypting pilot location. Other than that it's not a huge deal. I think RID can be beneficial to manned aircraft in that they should be able to tap into it to avoid collisions.

Since Most of us use Cellphones, couldn’t they just incorporate the Remote ID into the App or something? That would make it simpler for everybody!

No. First, there are many locations where you can't get a cell signal. You want your drone grounded because it can't connect to a network? Second...it WILL NOT BE FREE. You will need to PAY for the service which was to be controlled by a SINGLE entity. Broadcast RID does not rely on any of that.

Good point as the FAA noted in their FAQ on the final RID rule that they "...decided to eliminate the NPRM "Limited Remote Identification UAS" category to transmit remote ID messages through an internet connection to a third-party service provider remote ID UAS Service Supplier [USS]."

Clearly several companies were thinking this would be a good source of easy revenue through charging hobby drone operators by the flight.

However I wonder if this change from internet to broadcast RID also necessitated that the Control Station Location information - in order for Law Enforcement to readily obtain it - be transmitted from the drone in the clear and thus available to anyone with the right App on their cell phone.
