Mini 3 Pro obstacle avoidance - not!

Ordinary tree climbers used spikes and a loop rope to scale trees. No hydraulic equipment needed.

Perhaps $10 might cover a typical climb in Brazil but in the US, I'd guess $100 as a minimum.

$600 sounds like enough to cut some trees to the ground!

It was a very densely packed Spruce, in a residential neighborhood and the drone was @35 feet up (sitting on a gnarly wasp nest)

But the tree service has a $600 minimum so it could have been 12 feet off the ground and they'd have charged the same. Though, if it was 12 feet up I would have found a way to get it myself.

Surely it's frustrating to see your drone stuck at 35' but not be able to reach it.

Not every tree climber has $600 minimum. I know at least 3 which don't. Maybe next time, if there is one, you can get multiple quotes, as that price was " as high as a Georgia Pine."

If you were backing while climbing, keep in mind the drone does not have upwards looking cameras. Front, back, and down is all you get. These all have some angular range, but it's small: only +35 degrees on the M3 rear sensors according to that manual post (even less if climbing going backwards).

Having carefully read the posts, I have concluded you crashed your drone. I hope you get a new one for Christmas!

G'day all, I am a novice drone pilot and I have joined this forum through the process of having to recently purchase a replacement Mini 3 pro after experiencing first hand the 'apparent limitations' of tri-directional obstacle avoidance. Having the obstacle avoidance function set to 'brake' and while ascending and travelling in a reverse direction the drone got tangled in the upper branches of a very tall tree. Un-recoverable unless I long lined in under a helicopter to retrieve it :)
DJI identified through data analysis that 'the aircraft crashed with obstacles when was flying left-rear direction and ascending. According to the analysis, the incident was caused by improper operation.'
I questioned this conclusion and was told that the avoidance system only works if the drone is flying directly forwards, backwards or downwards. Really?? It was going backwards, just at an upward angle. I am interested in the thoughts of those on this forum who are far wiser and experienced in this area on the DJI response. It just doesn't sound right to me.
Cheers
Flying upward was the problem. I have a Mini 3 pro too.
