Hi, I'm new on this forum and just bought a Mavic Mini as my first drone (fly time 4.5hrs, 52k's) and I absolutely love this thing, I'm devastated today. I've been taking off from an 1st floor balcony with no GPS, so I fly it out and hover for a minute whilst it gets GPS and tells me the home point is reset, then I fly. But last night was my first attempt at a night flight. It hovered outside my balcony as usual, but as soon as it announced the return point is updated it took off backwards at an alarming speed in an arc across the back of my house and hit my neighbours window frame. At no point did I touch the controls. It now has 2 broken arms and a dent over one of the vents. Happy to get it repaired or replaced, but not sure why this happened, don't want to make the same mistake again. Any advise would be much appreciated.

Launching from reinforced concrete surfaces is asking for trouble.
Your incident has the classic signs of a yaw error incident.

Hi there & welcome to the forum ? :D ... even though it's under these sad circumstances.

I agree with all others above ... but in order to to get a full understanding & verify the believed reason for your incident you can share the flight logs that are recorded into the mobile device you flew with, they will in detail show what happened & hopefully why ... with this you will have a complete lesson learned.

Your mobile device will usually contain one .TXT & one .DAT log ... the first include all the aircraft movements, camera data, battery data & status and error flags. The second include all raw sensor data together with all motor data.

Only having the .TXT will give a strong indication ... having access to the .DAT will in most cases prove the reason. Unfortunately the .DAT log have been deleted in many Mini incidents if autosync to DJI cload services have been active.

Go here and read up on how to retrieve these 2 mobile device logs (read under section 3.) --> Mavic Flight Log Retrieval and Analysis Guide

Attach them then in a new post here & somebody here will read them & point out the reason for your misfortune.

I had the same problem taking off from balcony when was dark. Luckily I was able to control the drone but was a close call.

I flew the mini many times from the balcony during the day.

The problem probably doesn't have anything to do with the ambient light. When there are insufficient GPS satellites and the ambient light is not good enough for vision positioning to work, the drone goes to the ATTI mode in which it will just drift around with the wind instead of flying like having a mind of it's own at high speed.

Thank you all for your opinions and suggestions. I took the drone back to the DJI agent I bought it from (Perth Drone Shop). They told me that DJI wouldn't give me any assistance to repair the damage. So they will replace both L/H arms at a cost of $273, it will be ready in 1 week. I'm still concerned the drone isn't going to rogue again when I get it back.
I will also purchase a set of arms and replace them myself if it does happen again. A recommendation of where the best place to purchase parts would be appreciated.

Cheers

Dave

All the more reason to post your recorded flight data, so you can confirm the actual cause of the incident.
Drones don't just go rogue.
There is always a cause of even the most unusual flight incidents.

Go to DJI Flight Log Viewer | Phantom Help
Follow the instructions there to upload your flight record from your phone or tablet.
That will give you a detailed report on the flight data.
Come back and post a link to the report it gives you.

Hi, in an attempt to upload the data when my drone crashed. I copied my DJI Fly app from my Galaxy S10 phone to my windows 7 computer. I can see the flight on my phone but not on my PC. Does anyone know what software I need on my PC. I've attached the last flight. I'm standing in my balcony at the time. The joystick record shows I tried to counter act to the right. But I think it proves I didn't send it into the house next door. Opinions are more than welcome.

Here's what that flight data looks like: DJI Flight Log Viewer - PhantomHelp.com
The drone started to pick up speed gently without joystick input and accelerated from 0:18.7.
This and the curving flight path is characteristic of a Yaw Error caused by launching from somewhere close to steel that deflected the compass which is used to initialise the gyro sensors.

Was the launch surface reinforced concrete?
What direction was the drone facing at launch time?
