My Mavic Air was flying to home over Hanalai bay, Kauai when it lost altitude rapidly and dropped in the sea. There are no flight records of this flight. Wouldn't that indicate a mechenical/software failure? DJI won't answer this question. Any input?

It most likely is an indication of a mechanical failure or pilot error. Without the flight log, there's no way to tell which is the case.

If you were flying with DJI GO, you should have both a TXT flight log and DAT flight log on your mobile device. See the instructions at the bottom of this page to locate the TXT flight log. See the instructions on this page to locate the DAT flight log.
