How does it really work? I try testing it and fly close to a tree and the remote vibrates around ~8ft away but it doesn't come to a halt. I can still fly forward closer and closer to the tree.

Is there a way to set a warning distance or is there an option to have it stop completely even if you try to force it to go closer?

Trees are tricky. Since they aren't a solid object the Mavic may miss the outer branches. Same is true of thin objects like power lines. Obstacle Avoidance can help but you shouldn't count on it.
