Hi everyone,
Today, a video of a service that is essential to the life of the islands ...
For centuries, boats have woven connections between the islands of the Gulf of Morbihan and the mainland. During the Middle Ages, monks and inhabitants ensured these crossings with their modest boats. In fact, the Île aux Moines (Monks' Island) owes its name to these monks.
At the end of the 19th century, the Vannes Navigation Company with Steam Boats inaugurated the first regular routes, marking the beginning of a new era for maritime transport.
Today, nearly ten lines crisscross the waters of the Gulf daily. Modern passenger boats have replaced steam boats, transporting more than one million passengers each year. For islanders, these shuttles are much more than simple boats.
True backbones of island life, they maintain the vital link with the mainland, allowing children to go to school, workers to reach their jobs, and inhabitants to access essential services. Thanks to them, the Gulf islands remain alive and inhabited throughout the year.
Enjoy,
Matt
