Well you should not think of this as a standard old fashioned parachute. It may well have a single carbon fiber cord coming out of the base attached to the drone, to make sure any spinning prop would not be able to cut anything, and then have the standard parachute lines going up to the canopy from that cord. That is the way the ballistic recovery chutes work on small aircraft, such as the BRS brand, for example. So it is quite possible, plus if it is falling out of the sky, one can assume the motors have all but stopped as it plummets earthward.
