So if I want to power my M2P but not fly it, say to update firmware or access the internal storage, should I unfold the arms and remove the gimbal cover?

I guess the 'safe' and easy answer is yes. But is it necessary?

Yes. The gimbal will startup, and you'll get motor overload. As far as unfolding ... not sure, but why wouldn't you? Internal storage slot is hidden behind arms anyways

You don't have to unfold the arms but BY ALL MEANS TAKE THE GIMBLE COVER OFF!
If you don't you can damage your gimbal with the cover on, whenever you power your drone on the gimbal goes through it movements.
You may want to also remove the propellers for safety reasons.

The IMU calibration instructions require the arms to be folded in. But, always remove any gimbal cover before power on.

Internal storage doesn't involve any slots!

I found it silly where they put the C port. The binding button should be there instead. You hardly ever need to go there.
