Looking to see who uses a drone in public safety.
What types of team is using a drone?
What type of drone does your team use for the sUAS ?
What are the requirements for pilots?
Is there a contact for your agency that is the drone expert?
Is there insurance on the equipment?
Have there been successful deployments?
Please share drone stories with me.
Do your programs include mutual aid to other agencies?
Do you operate with waivers and which ones? (or just use a COA?)

Respond or email me at [email protected]

I am a 1st responder who is looking to start a program in my agencies.

I can't help you but I wish we had drones before I retired. I've been out for 5 years now. Stay safe and good luck.

@PWIdmayer

Looking to see who uses a drone in public safety.
We use sUAS with Public Safety. We use them on the local and State (NC) level.

What types of team is using a drone?
We support Fire, LEA, Emergency Services, and are very active with SAR (Urban and Mountain)

What type of drone does your team use for the sUAS ?
Our company has DJI Phantom3, Phantom4, Mavic Platinum, Yuneec H520 and access to a pair of Matrice 210's.

What are the requirements for pilots?
  1. Part 107 to apply.
  2. 40hrs documented/approved sUAS Flight/Ethics Training
    1. 24hrs class
    2. 16hrs flight
  3. 10hrs in "type" of aircraft to be deployable
  4. min 1 hr in "type" of aircraft in last 30days to be "current"
ReCurrency:
Pass Dept/Agency Proficiency Course in the last 12 months or have logged 12 “mission/training” flight hours using “type” of aircraft

Is there a contact for your agency that is the drone expert?
Absolutely YES.

Is there insurance on the equipment?
Liability and Hukk Coverage across the board

Have there been successful deployments?
Of course. We have supported LEA, Fire, and SAR operations. To date we have not "found" anyone during a SAR but our objective is larger than just "finding the missing person".

Please share drone stories with me.
Where do we start? It's been going strong for a few years now.

Do your programs include mutual aid to other agencies?
Absolutely. Local, State, and Federal. We've been deployed in 4 different states.

Do you operate with waivers and which ones? (or just use a COA?)
To date the only Waiver is Daylight Operations because we have very little controlled airspace so we can pretty much do everything we need under Part 107 or using the FAA's SGI process.

With all due respect I like to respond in public so others can learn from the "banter".

It's a daunting task many times but do your research and don't be in a rush. Learn from other's mistakes every chance you get.
