I live near Chicago. Based on this map, I don't live in the red or green zones. However, I believe I am in Class E5 Airspace, layers added in the image on the right. I've been flying from my house for years now. I haven't flown in a while. When I go to fly, based on the new rules, am I violating them?

Also, will my Mavic work or will it be geo-fenced? If I understand correctly, in controlled airspace, we need to use LAANC, but I hear that isn't working, nor do I know how to use it yet.

I don't live near airports of any kind, I guess there are some helipads a few miles away, no towers to my knowledge. I don't see why I shouldn't be able to fly from a practical standpoint, but from a legal one, that may be a different story. If my fears are correct, I'm the owner of an expensive doorstop. I realize this is being discussed everywhere, but I need clarity on whether or not I am doing something wrong.

Thank you. I'm happy to hear the answer, but even more, I appreciate you explaining it in a way that I completely understand. I never go over 400 feet, I stay close to the ground like a good chicken should
E5 is 700 ft Class E, and so Class G from the surface to 700 ft AGL. Unless you are exceeding 700 ft AGL, and so violating the 400 ft limit anyway, you will not be in controlled airspace.

@Dronin KUDOS to you for asking. This is an excellent question and I'd bet Class E airspace is one of the most confusing for sUAS operations. Once you get a firm grasp on airspace on the charts etc it gets a LOT easier.

Again very good question.

But even Class G can be controlled if it contains IFR or other navigation aids?
