When flying, and this happens regularly now, the RC actually goes dark, turns off and when rebooted won't reconnect so the DJI Mini Pro 4 flys to home and lands. I've used DJI Assistant to reinstall latest code on the RC, but no luck, same problem. Is there a way to reset, reinstall software in the drone itself? I think that may be where the problem lies.

Oh, that does not sound good. I wouldn’t think it was the drone, I’d think it was the controller battery or something deeper inside it. Is it showing a good amount of charge level when you’re able to restart it? OK what about if you gently shake the controller, does it stay on? If not, perhaps there is a possibility it has a bad solder point somewhere inside it. Just thinking maybe the battery has a loose connection or something. It is relatively easy to open up and replace the battery on some of the older controllers like for the Mavic series, but I’m not sure about yours.

I would talk to DJI.

I spoke with DJI they had me reinstall the RC software using DJI Assistant. I took it out to try it out and same problem, immediately and the drone just hovered for about 10-15 minutes as I had no way to control it. Landed in the flower bed. Was going to send it in, but downgraded the RC software, and reinstalled the software on the drone and it's working fine now. I think it was a glitch in the code In the drone, not the RC.

It sounds like a possible glitch in the RC firmware since the downgrade fixed it. The drone isn't able to control the remote controller, so it's unlikely that it would be able to power it off.

Excellent point. Yes, the RC would go totally black while in one instance the drone away continued flying and came to the home point on it's own. The RC going black felt like a software crash. Somehow, even with a current version software reinstall on the RC using DJI Assistant, and guided by DJI staff, the code was still broken on the RC, but was then fixed when I did a downgrade.

I thought it was working properly but again, while flying adding waypoints the RC went black. Fortunately the homepoint was clear and it landed w/o any assistance. I'm going to have to send it in.
