I thought all drones flying under the EASA upcoming 1 Jan 2024 requirements were required to have some form of Remote ID, but I now see conflicting information on internet sites regarding legacy drones flying in Open cat A3.

The EASA webpage (Open Category - Low Risk - Civil Drones | EASA ) under the section headed “Remote identification” states: Starting from 1 January 2024, all drones operating in the open category (with limited exceptions) need to be equipped with a remote identification system, but I cannot find anything explaining those exceptions.

Other sites seem to state that RID is NOT REQUIRED for Legacy drones between 250g and 25kg in cat A3. eg: Open & Specific Category summary for 2024 | EU Drone Port™ 🇪🇺

Can any expert in the EASA zones confirm whether the above exception is correct?

I have no idea, but I'd speculate there is an exception for <250g drones like in the US.

The 250g threshold looks like it's being adopted globally in most authorities. It's already a threshold in the EU for category distinction.

My experience has been in the USA & in Tennessee drones under 249 grams are exempted from RID
From my understanding in the USA if your drone is under 250 grams does not require to be registered by the FAA and flown for recreational purposes only. then you are not required to have rid. that is the reason I kept my mini2. No RID required for recreational flights
Further more I want to add as a part 61 aircraft pilot. I can not see drones RID on my the IRS, or Inertial Reference System including my GPS, Radar or collision detection system. Plus I can tell you after having interact with the law enforcement enough times when working search and rescue missions . the police do not know enough about the drone laws to enforce them, so I would not worry about it if flying in the USA. in the EU or Other countries I would check their laws

I originally asked about the EASA exemption for drones BETWEEN 250g and 25kg, NOT under 250g.

I now have an HCAA table showing that legacy drones flying only in Open CAT A3 do NOT have to have RID.
