RTK 2 Questions with Mavic 3T

I am looking at my options for an RTK base station in support of a Mavic 3T with RTK module.

I will be using the Mavic strictly in support of fire watch / search and rescue operations in the role of a volunteer. I am trying to keep my initial and recurring RTK expenses to a minimum

I will be working in the mountains and dense forests of North Idaho where there often is no cell service. I am also concerned that, because of where I live, it’s not likely that I will find any NTRIP/CORS transmitting stations in the vicinity.

My only interest in RTK is to enhance tracking, increase positional stability in elevated wind conditions, and to give myself the greatest assurance of getting the drone home safely. Outside of a grid search during a S&R operation, I don’t expect to use surveying / mapping capabilities.

With these issues in mind I am searching for the cleanest and simplest RTK solution with the least amount of necessary equipment.

Thus, my interest in a base station.

Please correct me if I am wrong, but the RTK module on the Mavic 3T works, in essence, as a rover...correct?

Since I do not need centimeter level accuracy for surveying or map creation it appears to me that I don’t need to invest in a solution that includes both a base and a rover station. Is that correct?

I have read contradictory information on the ease of use for the D-RTK 2. Some saying it was dead simple to use, while others criticized a convoluted work flow. What are your feelings in relation to my use case?

Do you have any objections to a base station like this? It seems cost effective:

Thanks for sharing any insights, advice or concerns.

You do not need RTK. Other than having you hold a position in heavy wind better it is not needed for your use case. If you are that close to something where the drone's drift in a heavy wind would cause you to hit it, you are way too close IMO. Also since the M3T is single RTK antenna only, it would not help too much in heavy interference since like a two RTK antenna system since it will not help with azimuth.

But if you really want to go this route, then the DRTK is what you will need since you stated you may not have cell service often. The DRTK will link directly to your M3T without an internet connection.

The Base you linked on Amazon will not send corrections to your drone unless it does so through an internet caster. Its radio will not send to your drone.

If you have cell service often get an Emlid unit. It has free Caster software to send NTRIP corrections over the internet.

Jaja, thank you so much reading through my long post and for your excellent response. You essentially answered all my questions.

I totally forgot about the need for two RTK antennas to help with heavy interference.

Rather than laying out the cash for the D-RTK 2, I'm going to follow your advice and either get an Emlid unit or look at another NTRIP solution. I've been reading about how effective the Starlink Mini is out in the field. It's lightweight, mostly weather proof and it fits in a backpack.

I'll report back and let you know I piece it all together.

Again, thank you so much for your generosity and kindness. I really appreciate your help!
