I always use an iPad Mini. I find that the screen of my phone, while much more ergonomic, isn't big enough to properly see all that I need to see (the shot itself, battery life, histogram...)

Bigger is better. * - 8- 8.4 inch is the best, 10 "is too heavy and need additional cable, special holder. With small tablets the original cable is fine and there are really simple options for holders......when order tablet, look for compass inside.More of the tablets does not have compass...

I use a Samsung 10" tablet. Nits are on the low side so I use a hood when needed. Made a neck strap out of a badge holder. For me the size is not cumbersome in 90 percent of my usage and image size is great. IMHO
