Cannot download maps on RC2 controller

I posted recently after my DJI Flip/RC2 would not let me log in to my account. I tried everything, then gave up and decided to just treat myself to a Mini 5 Pro fly more outfit. This of course meant I had a new RC2 controller.

But I'm still having problems. The setup worked OK (I haven't flown it yet because of the weather but the motors switch on and the controls all seem to work). However, I find I can't download maps. I checked the WiFi and the signal was 4 and 'fair' but when I go to offline maps, I just get that circling 'waiting' symbol.

Could this be due to the WiFi I'm using? I don't have broadband at home, or a smartphone with an Internet account, so I rely on public hotspots. Today, for example, I tried the downloading in Waitrose. In the past, when I've used drones where the software was on my tablet, I could download maps from Litchi and (I think) DJI from supermarkets and other hotspots with no problems, but maybe things have changed.

Do you need your own broadband at home to do this now? I'd hate to go to that expense.

Any advice would be welcome here. The drone is useless for my purposes if it can't use maps.

Any Internet connection should be sufficient, however you say you are using public wifi spots, these usually require you to open a webpage and fill out a form of some kind in order to connect to it, as the RC2 doesnt have a browser then this may be the issue.

Have you actually created a DJI account (head over to dji.com and create a login using the website) and logged into the RC2 with the user pass out of interest? this may be why you had issues with your Flip as all DJI equipment needs an internet connection to sign in and download any updates.

Thank you, MS Coast and Exphantomflyer.

Just a few notes to help people here try to figure out what's going on:

1) I checked that I have a DJI account. I logged in a couple of times to make sure it was set up correctly.

2) I know public WiFi hotspots usually require that you fill in a form, but I checked the controller and it said I was connected with a signal strength of 4.

3) I tried checking for firmware updates and after the 'waiting' symbol I got this message:

"Server error. Check network connection and try again (Code: 0x1103a0090012)".

I checked and I was definitely connected to the WiFi with a signal strength of 5.

4) I noticed that after switching on the controller, I get the message: "Before You Fly. Connect to network to view more". Before I click on the message I ensure my WiFi is connected. But in spite of this, when I click on the message I get the message "No Network Connection. Check network connection or access DJI Fly from your phone". This makes no sense. I should add here that I can't access DJI from my phone because I don't have a smartphone.

it said I was connected with a signal strength of 4.
That's the strength of the signal but doesn't mean anything about the ability to connect to any particular service.

Besides the need to login/register public WiFi services often block a bunch of things other than basic web browsing so not surprising it wouldn't work.

Well thats good to know

Yes it will show wifi connected, you are connected to the hotspot but until you login via a webpage you wont be authorised to use the wifi itself, their are no company hotspots that i know of that allow instant use without filling in some kind of form.

See note 2)

Again refer to point 2)

It seems that the only way you can get round this is to either use a friends wifi or find somewhere that has wifi that just requires a password and has no webpage login script, cafe's usually have these but not the big companies, or libraries etc

Thank you once again for your advice. You say:

"It seems that the only way you can get round this is to either use a friends wifi or find somewhere that has wifi that just requires a password and has no webpage login script, cafe's usually have these but not the big companies, or libraries etc".

You might have hit on something here. I remember that when I bought a Sony VR headset, I had a lot of difficulty getting online to set it up. Then I was told it would not work with what is apparently called a 'captive portal' which is one which puts up a form on the screen where you set up a username, agree to terms, etc. I was told that what would work would be the kind of WiFi in a cafe or pub where the proprietors gave you a password. I then took my headset to a local pub that had that sort of WiFi and this worked.

So, I'll try to find a pub or cafe and see if that works. Thanks!
