Removing the long strap has been discussed before, but now I have a proper solution!
I used a hacksaw to cut slots in the middle of the metal square ring where they can't be seen.
The strap slides off and is easy to put back on with no visibility of the slot.
One slot had to be slightly wider than the other because of the braiding is sewn close to the loop.
If you do it, make sure you protect the bag and strap from the saw and what ever you rest it on to avoid scuffing it!
If you cut wider slots, then the actual metal ring could be removed too.
The strap is rigid enough it won't fall through the slots. Or you could replace with better rings later.
See photos.

@Ian UK a neat and elegant solution, like the plastic tubing over the ends
thanks for sharing

Great idea! Thanks for sharing

The only downside I see is there's now a weak spot in the buckle and it might fracture under load.

Neat, like the plastic sleeve.
NB. only the buckle on the fixed end needs to be cut and the strap can be unthreaded to remove completely. Personal choice
