Hello Everyone ...
I am in need of purchase advice/recommendations, for a project I am about to start ...
To begin with, I am a Live Event Producer. My daily routine involves work inside large-scale arenas (where you might go to see a basketball game, concert, etc.), and stadiums & other outdoor venues (on a much less frequent basis). As part of my job, I regularly interact with TV & other crews, in determining camera setup locations in such venues. Not long ago, I purchased a non-DJI drone for my grandson, and was helping him learn to control it, when an idea came to mind.
Normally, in a given venue, I would walk around all seating levels, to visually determine the best spots for camera locations. But, as I'm sure many of you know, these venues are massive; just moving from one side to another (and points in between), coupled with moving from level to level, can take several hours in total (and, even though I don't like to admit it, I'm not as young as I used to be). The idea that came to mind when I was working with my grandson's drone, was to purchase a higher quality DJI model, then use it to do the legwork, so to speak. The idea would be to send the drone up to potential camera locations, so I could evaluate placement viability (view angle, possible view obstructions, etc.), while I stay on the venue floor to control it.
As this is a specific use scenario, I was hoping that some of you could advise, as to which DJI model, and control applications (iOS or Android; I use both) might be the best options. A short list of requirements for potential models would be as follows:
Ability to operate almost entirely indoors (massive buildings though; no GPS in arenas, GPS assistance in stadiums & other outdoor venues)
Camera ability to shoot both stills & video
Camera ability to lock focus on an object/person, then move around, while maintaining that focus lock
Collision avoidance (for obvious reasons)
Good quality camera (not for event use footage, but rather for me to look at, to help determine camera placements)
It is important to note that no matter what model I select in the end, at no time will it be operating in an entirely autonomous fashion. While I would like to be able to "program" flights to sweep around venue levels, I would still not let it operate entirely on its own (mainly for safety reasons) ...
In the research that I have done so far, the DJI Mavic Air model has come up quite a bit, as a possible selection. But before I actually go to make a purchase, I really wanted to get some advice/recommendations from people, who know what they are doing, when it comes to operating drones.
That's about it ... Thank you all in advance for your assistance.
Have a great day!
