With all the nanny-state junk that DJI has jammed into its products (forcing us to go to some trouble to rip it back out again), I've been surprised that a "Warning - Recording disabled - ok?" isn't in there too.

Mind sharing a tip on any particular settings to change when flying "through" something? I was expecting to hear you'd lost satellite signal and had it smack the ceiling or a wall.

I've been generally lucky w/ photography but was on a family trip as a kid w/ my dad shooting like 20 rolls of film throughout Utah and Colorado, only to find out he had a bad shutter and every single shot was completely overexposed.

Sure. Might be a little while. Editing is not my forte and I have a zillion GB of drone footage to sort through. I'll definitely try and post to this forum when it's done. Cheers.

It's on the laminated checklist I take with me every time I fly, but sometimes forget to read. Maybe I should put "Read checklist" on the checklist.

Nothing technical here, just a warning story from a numbskull Aussie.

We're coming to to the end of a 10 week journey through New Zealand. It is an incredible country, and after 27 trips to the Shaky Isles, I can safely say there's few other countries like it.

Forward to yesterday. We visited Cathedral Cove (any Chronicles of Narnia fans out there?). I've been using my Mavic Pro for about 4 months now. Hundreds of flights and some pretty amazing 4k footage of, well, everywhere in New Zealand. I even received permission to fly in a "no-fly" zone last Wednesday and got some outstanding footage.

Back to yesterday (Thursday 5th April). We landed at Cathedral Cove around 4pm. The crowds were starting to thin. I had a few practice flights in the actual cavern, but waited for people to leave. At last around 5pm the cavern was empty, the sun had gone down hence the lighting was even. I steadied myself (on battery #3), and flew a perfect line, starting outside the cave, right through to the other side. Nailed it. Lighting. Crowds. Flying.
I then nailed a flight back through the cavern in the reverse direction. 100%. We then started trudging back up the 40 minute steep walk to the parking lot. Returned back to the motel. Dinner. Time to empty the net and check out the day's footage...

I forgot to press "record".

People, you can be a world champion drone pilot, a Superbowl winner, an NBA MVP or even the president/prime minister, but if you forget to press the record button, you're a dill.

This is the second time this has happened on this trip. Hopefully my lesson is learned. The most important part of videography with a drone is pressing the record button.

Apart from that, all is good. Thankfully I still have enough gray matter to remember a special day in a special part of the world.

I hiked 4 miles into the Adirondack High Peaks area to get video footage of "OK Slip Falls". I did a test flight of the falls and recorded that...all jerky hard turns of course, nothing usable. I was just trying to get my bearing on where to fly and depth perceptions. The only access is from across a small valley with a 5 ft opening through the canopy of trees. Long story.... short. I went back a month later and go the shots I needed...DOH!!!

Nicely done!! Got some local falls I want to record and your clip gave me some good ideas for editing. Thanks for sharing. Noticed the other day the Mountain Sheep are back for some spring grazing on the local slopes, got to get them on video too if I can.

That's too bad. I'd wager almost all of us have missed out on some amazing footage by forgetting to be in Record. I hope to never do it a second time, but it'd be great to have an auto-record option. After many years of working in recording studios, I live by the premise that it's better to always be in Record than to miss those happy accidents.
As to Lichi and/or other alternative apps, I've yet to check it out, but I'd be interested to hear whether people feel it's worth the extra $20 (IIRC) over the DJI native app.

May I ask you to share where that no-fly zone was and whom and how you asked? I live in NZ myself part of the year, relatively close to an airport, and would like to ask for permission to occasionally fly higher than "shielded operation" mode allows me to.

Phew! That's a HAPPY END to a long story. Reading I was anticipating the part where you crash yr drone taking out the last kakapo & become the brunt of Kiwi Aussie jokes. Missing the shot... easy mistake we've all done!

Sure. I was in Tairua, and wanted to film from Paku Summit. It was just across the river from the unmanned airstrip. I always refer to the following site to find out where I can fly, and also to send off a flight plan if need be.

In this instance, the map brought up the relevant phone number for ATC in that area, which turned out to be Coromandel Council. I simply called the number, spoke to the lady and she gave me verbal permission to fly from the peak, as long as I stayed under the height of said peak.

Sure. I do know rule no 1 is "hit the record button." !!! In all seriousness, I'm no expert but I find that practice runs help, and doing them SLOWLY at first. The biggest problem most probably is the wind, which can come from anywhere when you're in a confined space. I think I have flown through gaps around 4-5 feet wide, but as I said, I'm no expert (or even intermediate) but practice makes perfect.

Yep. Got some wonderful footage of spring vineyards in Northern California. Got home to find I had forgotten to focus. The really annoying thing is that I'll have to go out and fly again.

YES! This exactly, both in using the physical button on the RC, and visually confirming the record indicator is... and stays... lit.

My day job is as a surveillance specialist, and I learned this lesson the really hard way, by watching crucial evidence unfold in my camera's monitor and then realizing, too late, that my "record" press wasn't held long enough, and "stop record" actually began the recording.

I'm now so used to periodically rechecking the red record dot, I don't even notice I'm doing it anymore!

The DJI app (to me at least) is good but flaky. I've now taken to using the actual physical buttons on the RC.... (I know, it doesn't take away from the fact that I should always check to see if the footage is rolling.)
