Pretty good capture of this interesting phenomenon. How often does this inversion layer happen? Once it does happen, how long does it last?

It happens quite often but I can't quantify it. It remains until the weather pattern changes, typically for several days but often just one or two and occasionally quite a few.

Thanks for the video and the tutelage. Living in Minnesota, the past two weeks have been around or well below zero F. I have seen the inversion layer, but never had it explained or illustrated so well.

Very interesting, yet sad, video. I would hope something could be done to combat all that pollution.

Everyone here agrees. We have had stringent regulations that are limiting wood burning stoves and coal heating so amazingly it's not as bad as it was. When it gets to -40F and colder the exhaust from cars freezes immediately creating "ice fog" all around the city and particularly in the roads making driving hazardous. It's quite something.
