Thinking of upgrading from a MP1

I’m not from this forum, I tend to stay in the Mavic Pro one. So... I’ve had my MP since June, and I am wondering if anyone here has made the move from selling their MP and buying a Pro 2? If I can sell it with extras for around 500, is the MP2 a good deal for a grand? Is it worth that upgrade?

How much do you fly and do you feel you are extracting everything you can from the MP?

If fly fairly infrequently and / or are happy with your shots and footage then I’d say not. If you are a fairly serious photographer or videographer then the camera in the 2P is a substantial step up.

I have the MA which I love dearly and am more than happy with but for really nice shots I can get more out of the 2P.

I fly weekly. I am happy with shots, but travel every season and would like to have the best shots.

The camera quality is the factor. I just want to hear from a normie who upgraded, if they felt it was worth it. I’m trying hard to stomach paying more for an upgrade, even with selling the original, than I did paying for the original.

It's not really quality but more in the range of use is more suited towards professionals and is usable in situations where the MP falls short.
So you would be using it more (if you have the need!).
Of which I don't and am happy with my MP. To get the slight ease of use in varying conditions would mean shelling out nearly 3 times as much to have the same package for the 2pro version.

Well the camera on the Air is the same as on the Pro 1 - perhaps even a little better optimised so I can still make a reasonable comparison.

The 2P’s camera is much better - significantly more detailed and a good couple of stops greater dynamic range.

In good light there is not so much in it (although the 2P still has it). In low light or at night there is no contest.

You do need to be prepared to do a degree of work post to get the best out of it though.

If IQ is king then yes, the upgrade will be worth I think.

Interesting posts. The M2P camera alone constitutes an over $1000 upgrade from the MP1? That’s my bottom question.

Only you can answer that as it is entirely subjective. The law of diminishing returns kicks in and the competency of the operator may be a factor.

Have a look at some of the photos taken by @SteveCA and others and see if you think the difference is worth it.

I don’t have the M2P so no, I can’t answer that. That’s why I’m asking members here to give their input.

Apologies - that was kind of my point. I do have an M2P and and MA (with it’s largely similar camera to the MP1) so I can make a valid comparison between the two. Hence my posts above.

Is the M2P $1000 better than the MP1 or MA (given they are now pretty much the same price I believe the comparison to be valid)? Probably not on pure monetary terms but I love photography and think the camera on the 2 is very much better so to me - I am happy with the cost.

Will you think it is a worthwhile step up? I don’t know - I don’t know how important absolutely top grade IQ is to you, whether you spend time in front of a calibrated display post-processing your images, whether indeed you have $1k to spare on a new drone.

Thanks for the response. That makes sense. I tend to say, hey that jpg looks nice, maybe some easy fixes—but no, I don’t open every raw file and optimize. In that case, you make it sound like if all I do is point and click it’s worthy of an upgrade. I’m happy with my MP1, and I’m not interested in the air. Just the Mavic 2 Pro if anything.

I’m going to Iceland over winter break, and I know it’s not a good idea to buy things quickly like this!

Yeah if I had an MP1 I would not be interested in the Air, except it is just so small and portable (hence why I bought it over the MP in the first place).

The M2 is a step up from both though.

I have the Mavic and the Mavic 2 pro. For photography, the difference is significant, especially in low light. It does depend on your intended use. I find the mavic perfectly suitable for daytime shots as well as almost any shot that will be viewed on a phone, tablet, or laptop. But for photos that might be printed larger than 8” by 10” the Mavic starts to fall short.

For low light photography, there is no comparison. The MP 2 Pro is far superior.

For video, the Mavic is sufficient in daylight, but the MP 2 Pro is still better, just not lightyears better. In low light though, the differences are quite noticeable.

one more thing, stability... the MP 2 Pro is amazingly stable. Much more so than the original mavic.

I’ve seen a number of long exposure photos that were very sharp. Some as long as 8 seconds. here is a photo shot in 15mph winds with a 4 second shutter. IMG_9193.JPG

I’m impressed with the image quality of Mavic 2. I’m not so thrilled about the price since I already have the Mavic 1. I’ve been thinking about Autel Evo and I like Parrot’s Anafi drone. Their software feature blow DJI GO4 out of the water. Programmable way points, “camera man” etc. I just wish the Anafi had DJI’s transmission tech.

Keeping my Mavic 1. I may purchase Parrot Anafi too.
