Vintage Audio Heart Attack this AM

Hey All. As well as drones I enjoy building and listening to an amazing vintage audio setup. I have Speakerlab speakers and Hafler amps driven with Yamaha processors and it sounds amazing.

So I turn on some tunes this morning and am sitting checking my email and such and heard a crackle in the right channel. Being early ‘80’s equipment I am used to that and don’t panic. However, when I looked up this time there was smoke billowing out of a Hafler DH-120 and by the time I got to it to unplug it and get it out of the house there were flames coming out of the top.

Holy crap Guys!!! That scared the heck out of me!!!

On a positive, all is safe and a replacement amp was up and running before the smoke cleared. Priorities……….

I didn’t know Lucas(The Prince of Darkness) made the wires Hafler used.

Reminds me of an old joke…..Why do Germans drink warm beer? Cuz they have Lucas refrigerators.

The smoke is incorporated into the wiring and construction of electrical devices.

Once the smoke leaves the device, that's the visual and odorous cues of failure.
