Typical of retreating escarpments on the Colorado Plateau, the Book Cliffs are a prominent feature that runs 250 miles from Palisade, Colorado to Helper, Utah. These photos were taken north of Fruita, Colorado. The first image was shot using the 24mm (equivalent) camera. The other two were taken with the 70mm camera. All were shot at or near my maximum selected altitude limit of 395 feet above the launch point in the valley below. The geologic strata exposed here are the heavily dissected Mancos shale, below, and the more resistant sandstones of the Mesa Verde formation above. Both units are of Cretaceous age.

Magnificent scenery very well captured. Thank goodness for our drones. We would never shoot these sort of pix without them.

Beautiful area! Grew up near Vernal, UT. Spent a lot of time in the Book Cliffs. Made me a bit homesick to see that dry landscape again. Currently living in the flooded Puget Sound.
Have you ever visited McConkie Ranch northwest of Vernal? Fabulous display of rock art.

You are doing great stuff out there. Love these images. Great compositions, and balance of sky light and land.

If you ever get the chance to travel to Hanskville, Utah (about 3 hours south of Salt Lake), you will be blown away by scenes like these. Many You Tube videos on Hanksville.

Yes! Amazing rock art and history! A little further SW Nine Mile Canyon has some fantastic art as well. I grew up on my Dad's 40 acre allotment from the Ute Tribe (he was enrolled), near the Uintah River west of Vernal. We had one panel of rock art on our land and a few dye pots carved into the sandrock as well.

I've been through Hanksville and beyond many times, most recently two years ago to observe the total eclipse from near the entrance to Capitol Reef NP. There's captivating desert or mountain scenery nearby in every direction from my home.
