Is there anything that can be done at all, those that have experience it... What are the trends? Is this flyaway only when all connections are lost? Or just at random, no matter the distance/connection integrity?

What are the trends?
The trend is that the pilot does not understand what's occurring -- hence the conclusion that the Mavic is flying away on its own.

Read the Mavic manual in its entirety and understand everything within it. If you do not understand a topic, research it or ask for help. When you understand exactly how the Mavic is supposed to function, you'll know what to do in situations where it does not seem to be obeying your commands.

Thank you so much, I will read manual again, I'm having issues with atti/gps/rc mode.... How do I switch between them and why does it switch itself between them

It's not possible to manually switch to ATTI mode. The Mavic will auto switch to ATTI mode if it's not able to use the GPS data and/or is not connected to enough GPS satellites.

If the mavic is switching from GPS to ATTI and your GPS count is in the high teens when outdoors, then it simply means you have bad compass calibration or you doing compass calibration dance before every flight.

You should only need to do 1 clean compass dance in an open grassy field. After that, if you get any warnings, you should simply move your mavic a few meters away or do a hand launch to avoid rebar in ground. You need to remember that the mavic is low profile which means the compass is very close to the ground.

Hopefully in future iterations of drones, multiple cameras/sensors with gps aid will be used to determine direction instead of relying on archaic compass technology. Google Daydream Virtual reality is using the main camera and gyro and accelerator to do precise zero latency head tracking that is just as good as Oculus. It basically uses the last frame vs previous frame to track movement.
