Whidbey Island Naval Station takes down drone

Last edited:
sad what the world has turned into. after recent events in Iran and the surrounding area, a drone near any military installation is going to be met with the full force of the military and it's sad because it hasn't always been that way.

If you think disabling a drone using "Unspecified defense systems" (quote from the Navy times article) is "the full force of the military" you're in for an incredibly brutal awakening. :). A UAS flying on a base like Whidbey Island could be a very real threat. That's a far stretch from "flying a drone near any military installation." I fly near military installations all the time but I fly legally which means flying the appropriate distance from the base. We all know there are plenty of tools out there showing where you can fly and where you can't. If you're flying somewhere where your flight could be cause a threat to human life, you deserve to have your drone taken down.

He's flying inside the base perimeter ... not near. It's also a large air base. I doubt they used any kinetic countermeasures; they probably just used ECM which the Navy has several different varieties. That dude is obviously not Part 107 certified but he should have at least taken the TRUST test.

glad they took it down. not sure why you think they should have allowed it to fly. given the recent threats from Iran, the military should use whatever capabilities they have to stop a drone that appears to be a threat regardless the distance. what's so hard to understand about that? I don't know the facts or the details of the flyer but if he's in the military, it's not going to matter much, they will deal with him appropriately. for this one, it's not our call as civilians and you should agree with me on that.

?? You quoted me here.?? Was there anything in my comment that mistakingly made you think I was saying they should have allowed it to fly?

I don't know, I just hit the reply for the two people who responded to my comments. If you agree with me that the military did what they did which is good and the pilot is rightfully in trouble for what he did, then cool.

Perhaps you could consider actually reading the comments before you reply? I dunno, just a thought. :) Neither reply said or implied we thought the pilot was ok to fly there. I did point out the sensationalism of your comment that they used "the full force of the military".

Yep, for sure; that's the same thing I first thought when I saw the replies to my comment. LOL. ;)
