Work Flow Help Needed

I need help with my work flow. Okay, so I shoot 48MP stills on Mt Air 2 and I take the card out and insert it into my Mac Mini.
Then I download them from viewer to preview. When I do this I have only a low res 72 dpi image. What am I doing wrong?

What you are doing wrong, is assuming that 72 dpi means low resolution.
dpi is irrelevant to resolution.
To see what resolution you have, look at the pixel dimensions of the image.
If you have 8000×6000 that's 48MP at any dpi.
