I am a relatively new pilot and am looking for insight regarding helicopters/helipads. To date, it has been easy to contact airports and control towers to inform them of a flight when flying within 5 miles, but heliports have proven to be a lot more difficult or impossible. In any given area there are often numerous heliports listed (some active and some not active) and some of the feedback I have read on the forums seems to question the need to even contact heliports altogether. I would appreciate any information experienced pilots could provide me. I don't want to limit myself excessively to where I can fly, but I also want to make sure I am flying safely and responsibly.
