Mavic took a nice swim

Here's a vid of a guy that dried out his Mavic and flew it after a fresh water crash.

If not rinsed in clear and / or distilled water before good drying it will invariably fail soon...

Having repaired a few Macbook laptops that had liquid damage (I would buy them cheap on Craigslist, fix them or use them for parts for others, and flip them to friends), I can agree with dewster....

The impurities in the liquid dry and form on the logic boards, causing shorts or creating corrosion that either shorts or eats away at other traces. Electronics will seem fine for an hour, or a day, or a week, but later they die from the original dunking.

When I'd take apart these Macbooks there'd be corrosion around the parts that got wet. I had a repair specialist that could fix some of them if only minor capacitors etc were dead. Some of them I brought to life by using some very nasty spray cleaner to wash out the dried on beer, wine, or hot chocolate (yes, I had all 3 in failed Macbooks that I bought) and get them working without parts replacement.

Im gonna do some test flights tonight and see how it performs after doing a thorough cleaning. From my testing yesterday, everything seemed in order and working with no issues.

Lets see, It knicked a pillar and INSTANTLY sank when it touched water. Dont expect any magical floating to happen. The only time it floated was when it was in mid air falling and everything was going in slow motion for me haha

Hey guys, just flew it. It is definitely acting strange, I get magnetic interference in a good spot and even after calibration. Compass 2 is "not detected". Downward vision sensors do not detect the ground and I was able to fly it straight down into the grass. I get a "TBE type" of effect except only vertically. It does not hold position strongly like it used to before.

Well, seems like ill be sending it in for repairs.

The Mavic is a tuff little bugger but not invincible.

DJI refresh does indeed cover it. Just saw a thread on it today.

I did not turn the Mavic on right after but ti was operable when I took it out of the water. I immediately disconnected the battery and let it dry for 2 days before powering up again. It worked at first and I took the props off and "flew" it on the table. Everything responded well with no issues. I then turned it off and let it sit for another day. I turned it on again after 3 days and it started acting weird and flashed yellow which means the rc wasnt connected. I tired manually connecting it with no luck.

The mess up: Was flying above a pool and was doing a large sweeping motion on a group of friends and I. I didnt realize how close I was to a pillar and one of the props barely knicked it and caused the Mavic to go into a downward spiral, hit a ledge of the pillar and straight into the water. Definitely pilot error no matter how you look at it. Mavic has no noticeable damage (to my surprise) besides taking a 30 second swim.

I do have it recorded but dont have the footage as of yet (bummed out so I havent even touched it). I dont expect the repairs to be too much and even buying a new unit is feasible for me. hopefully its only a few hundred dollars and the turn around is quick. Keeping my fingers crossed.

Just wondering does Obstacle avoidance not help in such situation like sweeping motion on a group of friends? I assume coz sensors are only in front and bottom and not side is that why?

Lets just say if I was flying forward, the obstacle avoidance sensors would've saved my Mavic. I was doing a sweeping turn and maybe if there were additional sensors located on the sides/back than it could have been prevented. Either way, it was still pilot error and my ignorance to my surroundings.

Question:

For water damage to be covered, it's sounds like a person needs:

DJI Care

DJI Refresh (is this a DJI Care add on?)

Given a person has both of the above , a total of 2 airframes are covered, the first replacement airframe is $79, and the second is $129. (For a Mavic)

Is all that right? The darn DJI website has me cornfused. :)

More video of the GF/SO please! Very nice.

Hahah there be more video in the near future when we go on vacation again.

UPDATE: Just dropped off my package to UPS. I have never packed an item as thoroughly as I have with my Mavic. I actually feel pretty nervous about this whole process even though ive sent items over the last 12 years with no issues on ebay. Hopefully the turnaround is just as fast as other people are reporting on this forum. Kind of a bummer that I wont have it for new years but Ill be happy once I get a repaired and fully functional unit back.

What's the difference between dji care and dji refresh?

They're one and the same thing. I would highly recommend you buy it since I will be paying for repairs out of pocket. I "thought" I would be ok without it for an extended period of time but accidents do happen. That being said, this is the first drone i crashed in any kind of water in the last 8 builds/5 years.

I am not so sure that is correct. Based on the website, DJI Care is a repair warranty where you get free repairs. DJI Care Refresh is a REPLACEMENT warranty. If you read the FAQ, when you send in a product under the refresh program they will send you an invoice for what the repair cost would be, at which point you can either pay for the repair OR use one of your two "replacements".

7、How do I replace my aircraft under DJI Care Refresh?

DJI Care Refresh is bound to the product’s S/N. If you want to replace your product, contact DJI Support via phone, email, or live chat. Then send your product to a designated DJI repair center under the instruction of DJI Support staff. Our repair staff will conduct damage assessment and send you an invoice. After receiving the invoice, you can either choose to repair your product or replace the aircraft under DJI Care Refresh. You will receive a unit that is new or equivalent to new in performance and reliability after paying the service charge specified in your DJI Care Refresh Service Agreement. The replacement’s S/N will be automatically bound to your DJI Care Refresh plan.

Thank you for clarifying that. A bit confusing at first and i shouldve done some googling before answering.

No worries, personally if this is truly how it works, DJI could have done a better job communicating the difference.

Drop mine yesterday to muddy river.Found it today. What would you recommend to do?Tab water then distilled water and after that to dry one week at rice?

Yes, be sure NOT to let it dry yet. Soak in tap water. Slosh it around well (you really want get out any residue or particles). Since yours was muddy, I'd repeat this several times to get out all the mud. This is controversial but in this case, I'd add some detergent in the first two wash cycles (some people say not to do this but it was worked for me in recovering badly gooped electronics). Then finally, do the distilled rinse then dry. If that fails, you may want to consider using a more heavy duty solvent but I'd try something mild (after repeating a detergent rinse again) like alcohol first. The solvents may attack some of the coatings and plastics used so this is risky.

Did anyone else find it ironic that after a seemingly short test of his Mavic that the guy in the video few it out over water? Not what i would have chosen for the first test flight... LOL

Not sure if youre talking about me specifically but most of my flights are over water. I do alot of watersports and most of my vacations are at beaches. Ironically, I didnt crash into the ocean but a pool lol
