If you are set on buying a Mini, buy a 2. As far as performance I have a Mini 1 and like it ok but it certainly has it limitations. If you just want to get your toes in the drone world waters, it's not a bad choice but it will make you want for more.
I am using a 6plus and also find it uses the battery pretty fast. I carry a power bank to charge the phone if I feel I need to but have had no real control or connection issues with it.

I have the same issue on the plate that the front prop arms pivot on. I just hit it with a soft wire brush and put a little WD40 on it. I find that you have to wipe these guys down after use. That air may look clean but there's all kinds of stuff out there.
I bought the Mini to start my great adventure into the drone world. I'm back and forth between CA and UT and find the desert the greatest place to learn. Not too many things to get you in trouble there! Love the rush of loosing connection to your drone lol. Great forum
