In poor words, IMU is the object that "understands" the position and movement of your drone and keeps it as stable as possible. You do not have to know anything special about IMU, except if it is necessary its calibration, and this is indicated directly by the App. About obstacle avoidance...

The max altitude is calculated from the home point level or from the ground level below the aircraft? And is it possible to fly below the home point level( e.g. if you start the flight from the top of a mountain)?

No. You do not have any issue with the warranty. You can have big troubles with law, if your country does not permit FCC.
