request4advice: power lines and depth of field

All of these ideas are excellent... however, the ones which require physical access - using triangulation or other measurement devices, will not be useful in many new situations that I encounter, as such access often isn't available - part of the reason for using the drone!! It sounds like the...

request4advice: power lines and depth of field

Yeah, they make me nervous too... but there are a few places that I've really wanted to investigate once I got a drone (yesterday's spot being one of them), and I'm stuck with the power poles at some of them... I'll try the suggestions mentioned here, and hope those keep me clear. I note your...

request4advice: power lines and depth of field

Yeah, that was what I was trying yesterday, but as I commented, I had trouble seeing the wires with the camera. I'll try again next time I go out. The second, taller power poles are more of a challenge, because the wires sag substantially when running between the towers, which are roughly...

request4advice: power lines and depth of field

I have an area in Newark, CA, near the bay, where I've been flying my new drone around. There are two high-voltage power lines which run through the area and then run out across the bay; one is roughly 100' high at the wires, the other is possibly twice that. I've been finding it *very*...

Are there any Android mapping apps which show regional restrictions?

I have my M2P registered with FAA, and am also using Kittyhawk and Air Map, but none of them indicate local or regional restrictions. In particular, We have several parks around here (Fremont/Newark, CA) which are owned by East Bay Regional Park District. EBRPD forbids drones in all of their...

heh... my M2P decided to laugh at me with video yesterday

So I was out flying around over some marshlands yesterday (Newark, CA), when Amtrak decided to cruise by, about 1/2 mile away. I pushed the drone up to about 100', and just let it shoot video of the train cruising by, turning now and then to keep it in frame. And I got a *lovely* video, too...

How does drone calculate altitude ?

What I'll try to train myself to do in the future, is... once the the drone has been running for a couple of minutes, make a note of what altitude it is showing before it heads out... that'll give me at least a rough baseline, to interpret the later values that I get.

How does drone calculate altitude ?

Whoa!!! No, I missed that entirely!! That makes everything make sense now. The levee that we were sitting on was roughly 10 or 15 feet above water level - which itself might not even be sea level, since it is at the end of a long, wandering slough (Mowry Slough). Okay, that puts everything...

Question about 'visual line of sight'

Question about 'visual line of sight'

We took our drone out again yesterday, and were flying over some feral lands near Newark, CA. I noticed again, that once it gets about 700' away, I definitely have trouble seeing the drone; I end up choosing my route by looking at the camera image, and comparing with the terrain that I can see...

How does drone calculate altitude ?

We took our M2P out to the levees behind Newark Ohlone College, CA, yesterday. I remain amazed at the wonderful quality of the images that we get from it!! What a babe. I'm still shooting in P mode, and almost everything is set to defaults. I *did* notice an odd thing about the position data...

how do you handle visibility of the phone screen in broad daylight ??

Aye, I always hike with a large-brim hat, mainly to keep sun out of my eyes when I'm hiking (or reading my Kindle!!). The two together - hat plus sunshade - seem to do an adequate job of maintaining visibility of the screen.

I forgot Gimbal protective cover and turned on Mavic 2 Pro

hmmm... user reviews on Amazon for this product are concerning, though. 10/83 reviewers gave it 1 or 2 stars, all stating that it was way too tight, and either damaged the gimbal or the cover itself broke... that's enough different statements that I'm not really inclined to just hand-wave them...

how do you handle visibility of the phone screen in broad daylight ??

Well, for my first field trials with the drone, I got the L200 sunshade for my Galaxy Tab A 10.1... it is usable, but sadly is a little too small for this screen; tablet display area is 218mm wide, while the shade is about 195mm wide. The result was that it always clips the screen on one side...
