I have used it just a few months ago and it works fine. But it was too big so I have stopped using it. What version of Tab A do you have though? Mine was the Tab A 10.1.
Technically you don't need to. Though most of the apple products work well with the app, a lot of android products do so too. If you don't like apple products then get android devices that are listed in the compatibility list of DJI.

Yes, one of the reasons I'm not sure if the iPad 2 or 3 will work anymore because the app keeps updating. Some updates on the app require higher system requirements. Not sure if the iPad 2 can still meet the minimum requirements.
I have used iPad mini 3 before (which is the same as iPad mini 2 but without fingerprint scanner) and it works fine. I'm not so sure now though if it will work the same as before.
