I've never experienced this firsthand, but there's quite a burden of evidence out there that damaged batteries can ignite like a blowtorch without warning and put property and even life at risk. There's no way I'd keep a damaged battery.

This happens to me a lot, except at about 30ft up. But then it goes away in 1-3 minutes... I assume it has something to do with getting a GPS lock or something.

Does anyone know if the battery is the main source of heat? If so, then swapping out batteries would answer the question of why the fan doesn't come back on afterward. Also, what is everyone's experience with warranty repairs? Does it take closer to a week, or a month? Or longer?
