I’m looking into buying a M2 as a first drone, and some videos mention “plugging it into a pc/Mac ” at times for firmware updates etc, but I thought this was done through the app. Question: 1) can you plug the Mavic straight into the PC? And what would this be for? 2) can it be used fully...

It's very obvious that you have to turn on the Mavic Air While connected to your computer for access to the SD storage and Internal Storage. But I wonder if you can connect without taking off the Props, unfolding the Arms and/or taking off the Gimbal Guard? The Gimbal Guard is my major concern...

Do I need a PC or Mac to update either the controller or the Mavic? Or can I make do with a tablet based DJI Mavic Pro - Stand and Cable Kit At this point I only use an iPad Air. I'd really like to avoid buying a PC. Thanks in advance.
