This bizarre-looking image started out as a 360 degree panorama.

I captured this 360 degree panorama over a lake using Litchi. I then transformed it using the following steps:

  • The images were stitched using ICE.
  • A copy of the image was flipped and appended vertically to the original.
  • The image was rolled vertically so that the top and bottom of the image were mirror reflections of each other.
  • The EXIF data was modified to enable a 360 degree view in Google Photos.
  • The image was viewed at one of the poles and captured into what you see here.

I thought the result was interesting enough to share.

I’ve played around with this too, shooting conventional terrestrial spherical panos. Little Planet and Tunnel projections. Fun with computational photography!

That’s me on the bank of the Sandy River. The outer image is tunnel, the inside is little planet, layered together in photoshop.

I would recommend for you to upload it to Kuula.co. There you can share the link and view it in 360.

An inside out tiny planet 😄

Much fun can be had with panorama software and using different projections for uses other than their original intention!
