That's a pretty cool shot. It's not often you see horses and kayakers in the river together

Yes. According to the US Forest Service, there are between 500-600 of these horses living near the Salt River in Mesa, Arizona. They have lived there since the 1600's when they wandered over from nearby New Mexico when Pueblo Indians freed them during a revolt from their Spanish overlords.

They are beloved & respected by the locals & are quite used to human contact.

Yes they are considered wild. Some have gotten free of ranches in the area. But there is a stable along the Beeline Highway that takes care of them. Some people like them, some not so much. Nice picture.
