If you are flying to get used to the system and not working then that is a bit of a gray area. Even if we fly recreationally we have to train with a new unfamiliar system so technically we would not be flying for fun as the intent is to learn the system. At any rate I think you can classify your training with the equipment as a recreational flight, unless you plan to use the footage of the trees and cannons in your job. Maybe @Vic Moss, Greg from @pilotinstitute , or @BigAl07 could chime in on this one.

I have to ask out of curiosity, what type of cannons and why would you be filming them?

So he needs his 107 cert to practice or be under the direct supervision of an rPIC with a 107 cert. Thanks for the clarification on that point.

Non-recreational flights, such as practicing for his job, requires Part 107.

But anyone can operate non-recreationally under the direct supervision of a Part 107 pilot - 14 CFR Part 107.12 (a) (2).
